France: Carotte de Tabac

These red signs denoting licenced tobacco shops are characteristic of towns all over France. I never knew the origin, but five minutes on the internet informs me that tobacco used to be sold in bunches like carrots in the market, and in red the signs are reminiscent of of carrots. Today sign manufacturers supply ‘carottes’ in neon and LED, as well as back-lit acrylic.
